Bottle

This stoneware double gourd-shaped bottle has an everted mouth and a lower globular body. The hand-painted underglaze iron decoration, includes geometric and vegetal motifs such as lotus panels inspired by Chinese and Vietnamese wares while the sunburst design are more typical of Sukhothai wares.Underglaze brown wares such as this are the largest and most varied group of Sawankhalok ceramics. The range consists of kendi, bottles, water-droppers, assorted figurines and covered boxes. The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai in north-central Thailand were at the heart of one of the largest ceramic-producing centres in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. Si Satchanalai, which was later renamed Sawankhalok, came to refer to ceramics that originated from either of these two areas.
