Battery Road was one of the early roads that was developed in Singapore during the late 1820s. It was built as the link between Commercial Square and the battery, Fort Fullerton. Situated next to the Medical Hall was the studio of G.R.Lambert & Co., the leading portrait studio and official photographer for all major political events in Singapore during the late 19th and early 20th century. The building opposite G.R.Lambert housed a number of tenants during the 20th century, including the Chartered Bank, the Bank of Taiwan and the Bank of China.
