Ceremonial tubeskirt

This textile is known as a 'Phaa Sin'. It is a ceremonial tubeskirt that was made and worn by women of the Tai Neua ethnic groups living in northern Laos. The textile was handwoven using hand-reeled silk and handspun cotton together with natural dyes. The geometric patterns were created with the supplementary weft weaving technique. The elaborate work on this piece of textile suggests that it was made for a special occasion such as a wedding.
