Malay jewellery from the northeastern peninsular states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pattani is highly distinctive in its use of faceted granulation (where gold granules are filed to produce geometric ‘faces’), filigree and red staining. These states, centred on Pattani (Southern Thailand), have developed a sophisticated goldsmithing tradition that is quite different from that of their flamboyant southern counterparts on the Sumatran coast. The pieces are refined, elegant and generally smaller in size, with a tendency towards minute detailing.
