Durga on lion

This piece shows Durga, the ferocious form of Mother Goddess, seated on a yali (lion) surrounded by three attendants holding chauri (flywisks). She holds distinctive symbols in her hands such as a sword and a trident. She also holds a lizard which is emblematic of the Mother Goddess. On the bottom-left corner is a devotee offering a firepot to the goddess. The work was meticulously done with a pen and then dyed with vegetable dyes including indigo. This textile was probably hung in temples for ritual purposes during festive occasions in honour of Durga.
