This black eartheware jar or amphora with a curved profile and two bow handles has decorations of striations around the neck and the footring. It is unglazed but burnished to give it a shiny black surface. This type of ware is known as Lifan after the area of Sichuan province, where such jars have been found. Jars of similar shape have been found in the Neolithic cultures of Machang (c.3000-2500 BCE) and Xindian (c.1500 BCE). To date, this type of jar has only been found in tombs.
