The Japanese Occupation in Singapore officially ended with the formal surrender ceremony held in the Municipal Building (present-day City Hall) on 12 September 1945. Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander (Southeast Asia), accepted the Japanese surrender by General Itagaki Seishirō at the event. Various victory parades were held throughout the island to celebrate the occasion.
