The early shipbuilding and repair industry was situated in Tanjong Rhu, which had been designated as a marine yard by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. By the 1860s, the area was already home to several European-owned shipyards. Further development occurred when the boatyards along the congested Singapore River were shifted there. Following the relocation of the shipyards to Jurong in the 1980s, the area subsequently underwent major redevelopment and is now an exclusive waterfront district used mainly for residential and recreational purposes.
