Military yen was issued in the Japanese-occupied area of China in 1938. It was made by taking unfinished Japanese notes and overprinting the characters that read ‘military yen’ on the obverse and reverse. Although it was eventually replaced by puppet bank notes in 1940, the use of military yen continued in Hong Kong and Hainan throughout the war.
