One of the pioneer hotel establishments in colonial Singapore, the Hotel de la Paix was established in 1865. It occupied the premises of the building originally built by the prominent architect G.D. Coleman to serve as his private residences. Commonly referred to as Coleman’s House, this building situated along Coleman Street was occupied by various businesses following Coleman’s departure from Singapore in 1841. The Hotel largely operated from the building until 1914, with the exception of a brief period in the 1880s when the premises were rented by prominent businessman Tan Yeok Nee. The site where the building once stood is now occupied by the Peninsula Hotel and Shopping Centre.
