This vessel was made by coils of clay which were smoothened with a paddle. This type of black earthenware usually have cord-marked deocrations as shown in this example. The black surface was the result of the pot coming into contact with the burning fuel during firing. The site of Ban Chiang was first uncovered in 1957. Pottery was found with skeletal remains, glass beads, as well as iron and bronze bracelets. Recent dating methods suggest that there were three mains phases of pottery-making, with the cord-marked earthenware falling into the middle phase of 900 to 200BCE.
