Telok Ayer Street with Thian Hock Keng temple

This postcard, which has been wrongly captioned as "South Bridge Road", shows a section of Telok Ayer Street with the Thian Hock Keng temple flanked by shophouses. Many rickshaws, or jinrikishas, can be seen lined up along the street. Introduced into Singapore in the 1880s, rickshaws were a common feature of the city’s townscape during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as they became a key mode of public transport.
