The Japanese surrender at the Municipal Building

The Japanese delegation to the formal surrender ceremony held in the Council Chamber of the Municipal Building was led by General Itagaki Seishiro. In this historic photograph, General Seishiro is seen signing the Instrument of Surrender which formally handed over Singapore to the Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia, Lord Louis Mountbatten. General Seishiro was acting on behalf of the Japanese Commander-in Chief of the Southern Army, Field Marshal Count Terauchi, who was severely ill in Saigon.
