The Legislative Assembly Elections Ordinance was enacted in 1954. An elector to the Legislative Assembly could be of any race or gender and had to be 21 years of age. He or she also had to be a citizen of the UK and the colonies, or be born in the Federation of Malaya or Borneo territories. The Legislative Assembly elections were held on 2 April 1955. Out of an electorate of 300,000, 160,000 voted. The Labour Front, led by David Marshall, won 10 seats and was invited to form the government.
