Born in 1899, May Wong came to Singapore from Sacramento, California with her husband Wong Shiu Kei in 1930. She was a very active voluntary social and charity worker. She devoted her time to organisations like the Young Women’s Christian Association and Po Leung Kuk (Office to Protect Virtue) and in particular to children's charities. She was a member of the Chinese Women’s Association and organised numerous social events to raise funds. In 1937, May Wong received the Member of the Order of the British Empire award for her contributions to Singapore society.
