This piece of wood carving is from a ratha (chariot). It would have occupied an intermediary position between the various tiers. Here it is a representation of the Markandeyanugraha murti depicting Shiva emerging out of a lingam to protect his devotee, Markandeya from the God of Death, Yama. As Shiva emerges from the lingam and kicks Yama, Markandeya holds on to the lingam. In the centre, is a small kirtimukha from which floral garlands are seen to be emerging out. Kirtimukha is a term used in Hindu and Buddhist mythology for the mask-like creature that appears above temple doorways to drive away evil and protect the devout.
