Nanyang University (better known as Nantah) was officially opened in March 1958 by then Governor of Singapore, Sir William Goode. At the time, it was the only Chinese-medium university outside of China. In 1980, under the NUS Act, Nanyang University and the University of Singapore merged to become the National University of Singapore (NUS). In 1981, the National Technological Institute was founded on Nantah’s old campus. The institute was renamed Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1991.
