Philips Discoverer helmet television

On 21 July 1969, 600 million people turned on their television sets to witness the first man to walk on the moon. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) programme in the United States had created an entire iconography that associated the discovery of space with the future and progress. The Space Age also had an influence on fashion and cinema, with the colours white and silver representing space travel. Capitalising on this mood, manufacturers redesigned home appliances, such as this record player with speakers, to resemble space-inspired products. Such items were sought after by affluent Singaporeans.
