This pillow case comprises a rectangular, velvet stiffened panel with raised patterns that is worked in sequins and twisted metallic threads. Motifs include a parrot, goats and plants. The border is worked in metallic thread embroidery in different colours while the hem comprises tassels and sequins.Beads and beaded ornanments were usually seen in the homes of old Penang Baba families, and usually during the 12-day traditional Straits Chinese wedding. A variety of beaded and embroidered ornaments would fill a bridal chamber lending a festive air and splendour on the auspicious occasion.Beadwork is an important aspect of Peranakan material culture. While absent in traditional mainland Chinese textile arts, it is possible that Peranakan beadwork developed from the community's interactions with indigenous groups in Southeast Asia.
