Cleaver

This is a 'golok', a kind of cleaver. Its special feature is that the blade gets broader and heavier towards the tip. The golok has a highly ornamented silver-covered sheath. Gardner, one of Raffles Museum's early collectors, obtained this item from a Mr George Dauberey, who told him that it once belonged to an important chief in Perak. This information is recorded in this museum’s collections register.Gerald Brousseau Gardner (1884–1964) was a colonial civil servant, a writer and occultist who travelled Southeast Asia extensively to add to his ethnograhical collection.
