This altar hanging made of red silk is embellised with gold thread embroidery. The top panel comprises embroidered figures of the Eight Taoist Immortals, who are a group of legendary beings revered by followers of Daoism. The main panel has motifs of dragons, flowers and butterflies. The rich colours suggest that this altar cloth was used during special occasions such as feast days. Wealthy Peranakan families purchase altar cloths of different background colours for specific use during funerals and weddings.
