This silver fruit stand is decorated all over with a foliage design. Negara Brunei Darussalam, a tiny oil-rich state between the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah has a silverware tradition that dates back to the 15th century. Silversmithing was introduced through trade with the Majapahit kingdom (1293-1528) of Java. Artisans specialised in making articles embellished with floral scrolling in chasing and repoussé. The most common motif was the scroll pattern, 'bunga air muleh' consisting of leaves and tendrils, which can be found in most Brunei modern silverware.
