This picture probably shows one of the last tigers that was killed on the island. As the animal's natural habitat was continuously ravaged for pepper and gambier plantations, the threat of tiger attacks grew, which resulted in numerous deaths over the years. Measures were taken, as the government gave rewards for carcases while tiger hunting clubs were formed. The last tiger on the island was finally shot at Goodwood House in 1904.
