Voting card for the National Referendum Paper

Singaporeans voted at the Referendum on Merger on 1 September 1962. Option A was that Singapore would become a state within Malaysia, with special conditions including autonomy in labour and education; all Singaporeans would become Malaysian citizens. This option received 70.8 per cent of the votes. Blank votes, which the Barisan Socialis had proposed casting as a protest against Merger, constituted 25.65 per cent of the total. The government however, decided that all blank votes would be considered as votes for option A.
