This is a 19th century painting of a washerman (Dobi) and his wife. This painting is from Tanjore, South India.There are three other similar paintings and they are of a potter and his wife, a snake charmer and musicians.It is interesting to note that paintings such as this were commissioned by the British East India Company and were used as records of every-day life in India.
