This is a watercolour painting from the Lucknow region of Uttar Pradesh, India. The lacquer painter is engrossed in his work and it seems the viewer is almost impinging on his privacy. It is interesting to note that strong muslim culture can be seen in Oudh paintings. This painting along with three other paintings make up the Oudh painting collection. The composition in almost every painting is divided into the interior - surrounded by a wall with a niche and through an opening on one side, the horizon and the blue sky can be seen in the distance. The combination of the open and enclosed spaces suggests an understanding of special treatment which the artist has consciously employed in order to keep his album of pictures fairly uniform.
