A view of Chinese Street

The photograph shows one of the streets in Chinatown. Sir Stamford Raffles had proposed the concept of a Chinese Town as he was dissatisfied with the disorganised physical expansion of the city, worsened by the huge influx of Chinese immigrants. Raffles not only divided Singapore into racial settlements but also separated the Chinese immigrants into pockets by assigning different streets within Chinatown to them according to their province and class. For example, the Hokkiens mainly occupied Telok Ayer Street, Chulia Street and China Street.
