Bras Basah Road

This postcard shows the junction of Bras Basah Road and Bencoolen Street, where the remains of the administrative block of the former Convict Gaol can be seen on the right. Closed in 1873, the remains were demolished only in the latter part of the 1970s. However, the three-storey houses on the left remain standing even today. Bras Basah Road ('bras basah' means wet rice in Malay) obtained its name from the wet rice that was exposed to the sun on the banks of the Sungei Bras Basah.
