The top of this lacquered pen box is decorated with floral designs in red and brown, and the sides with marbled effect. Lacquer was very popular in Iran during the Qajar period (1779-1925), and was used to decorate pen boxes and mirror-cases. This box would have been used to store the reed pen or other writing implements.
