Panel

This embroidered dressing table panel contains motifs of phoenixes, peonies and paired pomegranates, which are auspicious symbols in the Chinese culture. These motifs were modified from Chinese designs. Phoenixes symbolised virtue while peonies represented beauty, riches and honour. Pomegranates are symbols of fertility and having many offspring. The design of this panel is further enhanced with a beadwork border. The style of this piece, using the flat satin stitch, is typical of Penang embroidery.Decorative and ornamental panels such as this were commonly displayed around the Peranakan house, especially during festive occasions. The auspicious motifs on this panel would suggest that it was also used in the bridal chamber.
