Irish carpets were imported into the Straits Settlements and used by the local communities. For the Peranakans, these were treasured by them as heirlooms and used as table covers and carpets. They were popular for their auspicious colours and motifs such as peacocks and flowers in full bloom, and often displayed during special occasions like weddings. ‘Irish’ carpet is a generic term for these carpets which were made in different parts of Europe.
