The Japanese Military government encouraged gambling in Malaya and gambling dens were often set up along the streets.The ‘Syonan Shoken’ lottery tickets were first issued by the Japanese Military government in 1942 at one dollar each. In 1943, these one dollar lottery tickets were issued throughout Malaya with the justification that two-fifths of the revenue would be directed at the community for its welfare and towards the construction of public facilities. The prizes were provided by the Yokohama Specie Bank Ltd.
