By the 1860s, the style of bungalow architecture in Singapore had evolved. Following English traditions but adapting to the tropical climate of Singapore, the houses were simple but elegant in their design. They were typically square and compact, while a carriage porch at the entrance and a verandah above it were usually built in two-storey bungalows.
