Hokkien Street, built in the 1820s, was one of the roads that appeared on the original Town Plan innitiated by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. Many Hokkien immigrants from China settled along this street. The Hokkiens were the largest of the four main dialect groups that immigrated to Singapore from China.
