This vessel bears an inscription in Jawi (Malay in Arabic script) which describes it as a 'gantang' or rice measure. It also bears a date of the year 1322 based on the Islamic calender, which means that the rice measure was made between late 1899 and early 1900. 'Gantang' was a measure used in the Malay Archipelago and approximated 2.8 kilograms.
