School field trips are an integral part of an all-round education. The British did not take responsibility for providing educational opportunities to the children of Chinese (and Indian) immigrants. As a result, the Chinese schools in Malaya and Singapore were financially supported by clan associations and built to exclusively serve the Chinese community. A modern curriculum was introduced in Chinese schools of Malaya and Singapore in the early 20th century.
