This woven silk banner ('tung thieu') is made of silk and natural dyes. The design typically consists of a range of stylised elements that include different motifs such as Mount Meru (the cosmological centre of the Buddhist world), stupas, soldiers, celestial beings, the earth goddess, Nang Thoranee, and zoomorphic motifs such as elephants, and the 'sang-hong', a mythical long-nosed animal. The end of the banner includes the names of the donors who funded the making of the banner to the temple. This one indicates it was woven by Mrs Lorn Sukbin. The donation of banners to temples was an act of merit-making. They were hung during agricultural and other festivals.
