This rare Dehua figure is thought to represent a Daoist deity - perhaps Wen Chang (God of Literature) or Guandi (God of War). He is seated on a tiger skin draped over a horse-shoe armchair, with a tablet in his hands. He wears a flat-topped hat with perforations, from which tassels with ornaments may have originally hung. His long robes are incised with the motifs of dragon amongst stylised clouds. His feet rest on a foot stool with scroll legs.Dehua figurine sculpture is generally acknowledged to be the most characteristic production of the Dehua kilns. Figurine sculptures like this piece are fine examples of the most distinguished aspect of Dehua porcelain production.
