This embroidered round panel is created from threads stitched together using the technique known as the Peking knot. The outline of the motifs is done in gold metallic thread couching. At the centre of the panel is a pair of phoenix motifs. Peonies of varied colours form a border at the edge of the panel. The pair of phoenix symbolise virtue and faithfulness in marriage while peonies represented beauty, riches and honour. Pomegranates, which symbolise fertility, are also found on the design. Hence, the auspicious motifs on this panel would suggest that it was used during wedding ceremonies. These decorative and ornamental panels also had other functional purposes. They were commonly displayed around the Peranakan house and served varied functions, such as food covers and side-table covers. These were made visible to guests when they were entertained in the Peranakan household as many of them were traders and dinner parties were fairly common occurrences.
