This miniature arrow-shaped vase has a globular body and a ribbed neck flanked by a pair of tubular handles. It is covered in Qingbai glaze, which derives its name from the characteristic icy, bluish-white glaze. The size of the vase suggests perhaps it was made as a burial ware or 'mingqi'.Qingbai wares were developed during the Song dynasty (960-1279). Produced in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, they were exported in large quantities to Southeast Asia from the 12th century onwards although pieces such as these were usually made for the domestic market. This type of vases were popular during the Song dynasty, and were used in an arrow-throwing game played by the aristocrats during drinking sessions. Players were made to drink or perform if their arrows failed to get into the vase.
