Kettle with lid

This 'ceret' or large brass kettle has a bulbous form ornately decorated with panels of flying birds and plant motifs. A bird-like figure with dramatic wings sits atop the lid. An interesting feature of this type of kettle is the false lid. The handle has an opening through which water is poured in. Water is then poured out through the spout, which has an open mouth and a reptilian figure in relief.Larger brass kettles were patterned after the more common bronze ones, and were used to serve drinking water during weddings or festivals. They were usually adorned with elaborate reliefs of animal motifs and other designs on the exterior.
