This round accessory is worn on the top of the head above the Naga choti (serpent shaped-plait ornament). The two pieces depict butterfly and ladybird respectively. One sees a highly stylised pattern crafted in sheet gold. The form of the butterfly and lady bird lend colour and richness through the gems set in the gold. Most Bharatanatyam dancers, 'devadasis' (temple dancers) and goddess icons are adorned with this ornament. It represents the seat of knowledge and is worn above the head for decoration as well.
