Breast plate

This intricate gold Kavacam also known as breast plate was used for a female deity. The representation of the female torso is more frontal with tight breasts and a narrow compact waist. It is small in size, probably used inside the sanctum for the small bronze images placed near the main immobile deity, the mulavar. This female kavacam may have been used for Rama’s consort Sita. Kavacams such as this were specially used to decorate the bronze utsavara (mobile images) of south Indian Brahminical deities for festive occasions by the priests. Occasionally additional hands and legs were also added to extend the limbs, while clothes were adorned to give a greater size and prominent appearance.
