A Peranakan family

This photograph shows a Peranakan family. The Nyonya is wearing a baju kebaya, which was very popular among both Peranakans and non-Peranakans in the 1950s and 1960s. The Chinese woman in the samfoo standing behind the Nyonya, probably the servant, is carrying a baby. The Peranakans were often wealthy traders who could afford to indulge in ornate furnishings, jewellery and brocades.
