Kebaya

The Kebaya is a long sleeved outer garment reaching below the waist and opening in the front. This piece could have been made from voile, which is the French or Swiss variety of fine cotton fabric. The embroidered lacework on this piece is concentrated at the centre of the piece and also forming a small border along the entire length of the outer hems of the garment, including the fringes of the sleeves. The decorative motifs here are largely floral patterns. Garments such as this are common heirlooms kept by Peranakan families from the Straits Settlements and Indonesia.
