This photograph shows a Nyonya matriarch surrounded by young women and children, possibly her grandchildren. The matriarch wears a baju panjang with a white tunic underneath, while a sarong and a pair of beaded slippers complete her outfit. The baju panjang was the standard Peranakan women wear for much of the 19th century, which was long and loose fitting, making it suitable in the hot, humid climate of the region.
