This extremely rare painted cotton piece depicts shrines to Lord Shiva. The painting on the grey background is broadly divided into three zones encompassing smaller sections. The border is of a floral vine painted on orange. The cloth is textured and stiff like canvas and has very little surface damage. This inscribed painting from the Pahari region shows shraddha or death rituals related sites in the zone on the left, where most devout Hindus perform last rites of their parents or annual death rituals. This is considered very auspicious and customary. The most striking part of this painting is the presence of nearly ninety shivalingams (phallic symbols) that represent the regenerative force of Shiva, each referring to a major jyotirlinga or important regional Shiva temple
