This elegant lacquered wood presentation tray ('kalat') comprises a wide shallow bowl attached to a flared pedestal. It is a typical Lanna-style tray produced in Chiangmai. The red lacquer pigment is different from the Burmese red, as the Thais used cochineal lac instead of vermillion. This type of kalat was used to present ceremonial gifts to royalty and copies of Buddhist scriptures to monks.
