Mah Lye Wan was the wife of Wong Siew Nam, eldest son of prominent Chinese migrant Wong Ah Fook. She came from a scholarly family and together with her husband, they opened the first school for girls in Guangzhou, the Kuan Wei Girl's School, where she was headmistress.
