This conical cup and stand set is undecorated except for the white translucent, slightly greenish glossy toned glaze which stops short of the footring. The heavily potted stand in the form of a deep bowl has a saucer-like flange. Vessels of this type were thought to have been used in the consumption of alcohol as well as for beverages such as tea. During this time, tea was drunk from bowls. Stands or saucers were included to make vessels containing hot liquids such as tea and alcohol easier to lift and hold. Ceramic cups and stands such as this example are inspired by lacquerware and metalwork which became popular during the Tang dynasty (618-906).
